 About the Backpack Program

The Backpack Program is a project recently developed by members of the Junior League of Hartford, Inc. to address hunger in Hartford. Currently 40% of children (under the age of 18) in the Upper Albany neighborhood are living at or below the poverty level and many of these children rely on school and after-school provided meals for their nourishment. 

In an effort to reach some of these children, the Backpack Program provides backpacks filled with child-friendly, nonperishable and vitamin-fortified meals and snacks to students and their families. The backpacks are distributed to the students (identified by the Family Resource Center at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School) each Friday and are returned to school on Monday. For the 2010-2011 school year, 25 students benefit from this program. Our hopes are to increase the number of students each year, as we have since the inception of this program.

The Backpack Program is currently housed at the Unitarian Society of Hartford and students from the Watkinson School work with the Junior League of Hartford, Inc. volunteers to pack backpacks.

For example, to provide 8 weeks of backpacks, 8 weeks X $14 per week= $112.

The goal of the program is to provide elementary students in need and their families with weekly backpacks filled with nutritious meals. With your help we can reach this goal and make an impact in the lives of these families.
