Past & Current Projects

Our past community service projects have included Family School Connection, Souper Sustainers, Rebuilding Together Hartford and, most recently, the Backpack Program and Freshplace – to name a few!

With Hartford’s poverty rate being one of the highest in the country, our most recent current community service work is focused on alleviating hunger in Hartford.

•  To serve some of these children, we developed the Backpack Program to provide food when school meals are unavailable.
Through this program, over 20,000 meals were provided to children and their families over the past five years.

•  In 2007, the New Project Development process led to the League collaborating with Chrysalis Center and Foodshare to launch an innovative, new model for addressing hunger, called Freshplace. Open since July 2010, Freshplace is a client-choice food pantry serving those in need in Hartford’s Upper Albany neighborhood. Freshplace offers fresh produce, dairy and meats in addition to other staples. Based on a “hand up, not a hand out” approach, Freshplace provides targeted, individualized support and referral services to assist clients in attaining stability and eventual self-sufficiency. For six years, the League has supported Freshplace with planning, fundraising and volunteer staffing.
