Who We Are
The Junior League of Hartford is an organization of women committed to making a difference in our community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

We're in our twenties, we're in our forties. We're single; we're married. We're business managers, attorneys, accountants, doctors, nurses and teachers; we're stay-at-home moms. We've always been active in our communities; we're volunteering for the first time. We were born and raised in Hartford; we just moved to the area last month. We're members of all races, religions, and national origins.

Together, we do incredible work as mentors, teachers, community organizers, fund raisers, and advocates. Our nearly 500 volunteers are as varied as our projects; women of different backgrounds and life-styles united in their determination to improve the communities of the 21st Century. Our members are making time to be involved, and have chosen the Junior League because of the myriad of opportunities we offer.

The Junior League of Hartford, founded in 1921, is part of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. which is comprised of 294 member Leagues spanning four countries.

What We Do
Making A Difference
For 85 years, the Junior League has been committed to making a difference in our communities. We do this by assessing and identifying community needs, and then developing either direct programs or collaborations with other organizations and agencies to help meet those needs. The Junior League also provides volunteer support and financial support for specific projects through grants to organizations throughout Greater Hartford.

Community Service
Junior League volunteers serve an essential role in the Hartford community. Each year, League members provide over 100,000 hours of volunteer service to League programs and community organizations. The Junior League emphasizes and supports training for its members who benefit from both structured and hands-on training to work with a diverse group of women and become involved with critical issues and community leaders in Greater Hartford.

Leadership Training
The Junior League of Hartford trains women to lead and succeed by developing the potential of women as effective community volunteers. We provide strategic planning, budget management, team building, and fundraising for our community projects. Our members develop leadership skills and work with other committed women to make a difference in the community.

Fundraising
Fundraising is an integral part of the Junior League of Hartford's work in the community. Funds are needed for seed money as part of our new project development efforts and for our grant programs and office administration. Since the mid-1980's, the JLH has contributed more than $1 million to the community through our projects and through our direct grants. Our fundraising activities include the following:

  • The Clothes Horse

  • Personal Papers Plus

  • ShowHouse 2009

  • League, Links & Laughter Golf Outing

Community Board Representation
As Junior League members, we are trained in all aspects of running non-profit organizations. Our members play leadership roles in virtually every Hartford area non-profit. We also serve as appointed delegates to prominent community boards such as: Greater Hartford Arts Council; The Village for Families and Children; Christmas in April*Hartford; Asylum Hill, Inc.; Hartford Street Youth Project and CHOICE Advisory Board; and Healthy Families Task Force. The JLH also sends a delegate to Leadership Greater Hartford each year.

Public Policy
The League addresses public policy and influences action on legislation related to the needs of children, women, the elderly, the arts, the homeless and the environment. The Junior League of Hartford also participates on the Connecticut Council of Junior Leaguesí State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC). As part of "Making Women Visible 2001" day, League members visited the Capitol in Hartford and met with key leaders and policy makers to advocate for children and womenís issues. Recent issues have included the Connecticut Commission on Children, Family and Medical Leave policies, and the Bullying Task Force Report.
