President's Message

Welcome to the Junior League of Hartford! Since 1921, the Junior League has been making the Greater

Laura Hughes Hartford community a better place to live by promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. We are a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. The Junior League of Hartford is one of 293 members of the Association of Junior Leagues International, AJLI.

Our current area of impact is Empowering Women and Girls to Overcome Obstacles. We are collaborating with Junior Achievement of Southwest New England on a career awareness program for teenage girls. A community impact program must create opportunities for the League to educate our members about the issues, develop meaningful volunteer and training opportunities, and create measurable, meaningful impact for the population we intend to serve through professional collaboration with local nonprofits.

Additionally, the League is continuing to work with agencies that support the needs of women and girls and we will participate in single-day volunteer opportunities. This hands-on-learning will be organized by the Community Outreach Community.  The League also offers members one day community volunteering oportunities throughout the Greater Hartford area on an ongoing basis.

The Junior League of Hartford is able to accomplish all that we do through the support generated by our fundraisers. In May of 2015 we hosted our thirteenth Decorator Show House. Historically, Show Houses are how we have raised the majority of our funding for our programs and projects. Our longest-standing fundraiser, the Clothes Horse on Park Road, always has treasures waiting to be found. We invite you to follow the exciting developments and fun ways to shop at our "thriftique" on the Clothes Horse blog at or on our Facebook page for the latest happenings.

In addition to positively impacting the community, the League has always offered opportunities to create lifelong friendships while working alongside other women who actively seek ways to become more engaged in their community. These are the women who become the community and civic leaders of tomorrow. I invite you to explore our website. By doing so I hope you learn more about the League and become a member, partner agency, or supporter of the JLH.

The Junior League of Hartford…Women Building Better Communities.
