Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford
What is JLH’s Current Project?
The Junior League of Hartford (JLH) is partnering with Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford for the SMART Girls initiative. The SMART Girls program was developed to offer age-specific experiences that enhance girls’ physical and emotional health. It is a small-group program that utilizes a combination of informational and experiential learning activities to help female BGCH members develop the knowledge and skills necessary to practice healthy lifestyle choices. The program offers a unique opportunity for area young women to learn from and network with JLH members.
Who will the SMART Girls program serve?
The Boys & Girls Clubs’ SMART Girls program helps girls build that foundation by equipping them with critical knowledge and skills in the areas of physical health and wellness, mental health and self-esteem, and relationships. Encompassing the physical, emotional and social changes a girl who will go through between the ages of 8 and 18, this holistic approach supports her complete experience.

What are the main components of the SMART Girls Program?
The program is designed for small groups (15 or fewer girls). Keeping the group at this size facilitates more meaningful interactions between the facilitator and the participants and between the participants themselves. Building trust and a sense of safety within the program is key. Girls are more willing to share honestly and openly if they feel comfortable with one another.
The Structure of SMART Girls Program:
The curriculum is divided into three modules, one for each age group (8 to 10; 11 to 13; 14 to 18). Each of these sections features a three-part framework, which addresses the major pillars of a girl’s development.
- Your Mind: These sessions address self-image, personal identity and sound mental health.
- Your Body: These sessions discuss physical health and wellness.
- Your Community: These sessions focus on building positive relationships.
